After choosing a name for this Substack, I discovered the neurodiverse community has a love-hate relationship with the “Hey look, a squirrel!” saying the title is based on.
Okay, so I'm going to be my adorable hyper-literal self here because I am a literal squirrel-spotter. I love squirrels. Always have. And having been fortunate enough to have lived in multiple locations I've been able to catalogue the differences.
I was born in England and English squirrels (I'm talking about the immigrant greys because you rarely see a red these days) are mostly slim and lighter grey. New York squirrels are much larger, a little on the obese side from time-to-time (probably from hanging out with the rats), and often a darker grey. Florida squirrels have a pleasing hint of brown to them. And I've also seen black squirrels in both New York and New Orleans.
A legit literal squirrel spotter! I love this! I've only every seen one, when I was visiting New Orleans (pre diagnosis). You bet I 'hey look a squirrel'ed that sucker! Tried to take a photo bit it squirrelled away too quickly - much like my thoughts at times 😂
I hear you! My wife has heard the 'hey, look, a squirrel' refrain more times than she can count. And as a photographer I have some fine pictures of those little furry critters!

Embarrassingly, I had no idea that's what the saying is based on. Thank you, I learned something new today. Love your perspective 😊
